Group chats are the best way to quickly get in contact with a group of your closest friends, family members, or mortal enemies. Especially when planning big events like birthday parties, meetings, and holiday celebrations, it’s much quicker to text one group than to message everyone separately.

So, if you’ve ever wondered how to create a contact group on an iPhone for texts, this guide is for you.

Creating Your Group Step-by-Step

There are a few simple steps involved with creating a contact group on your iPhone.

  1. Open the green iMessage app
  2. Click on the “new message” icon in the top right corner
  3. In the “to” tab at the top, enter the name or number of who you want to add to the chat
  4. Select the correct contact or hit + if you typed a number
  5. Repeat until you add everyone
  6. Type your new text and hit send

A new group will be created once you hit send on your message. The group will remain in your messages app and be accessible to you if you ever want to send another group text message.

Naming the Group Chat

If you are the creator of the group conversation or are tasked with naming it, choose wisely. There are few honors in this world higher and few responsibilities greater than naming the group chat.

You will always name a group chat after it has been created. To name the chat, click on:

  1. The chat
  2. The top middle, where the contacts of those in your group are
  3. “Change name and photo” underneath the existing title
  4. Type your group name where it says “Enter a Group Name”
  5. Hit “Done” in the top right corner

This will automatically change the group name for all contacts who are part of the chat. This is also where you can change the icon picture for the group chat if you so please.

Adding People to the Group Chat

You may need to add new contacts to an existing group chat. Luckily, it’s easy to add anyone you need into your contact groups.

Click on:

  1. The group chat.
  2. The top middle, where the contacts of those in your group are.
  3. The tab for “people,” about halfway down the screen.
  4. When you click, the tab will expand to list those in the chat. At the bottom, there will be a tab with the + sign that says Add Contacts. Click that.
  5. Type the new person’s name or number into the “add” bar.
  6. Select the correct contact.
  7. Hit “Done.”

Creating a Group Chat With Android Numbers

Apple phones are most friendly when communicating with other Apple phones, but sometimes, one person in the group has an Android. They’ll probably tell you the camera is better quality.

Adding an Android smartphone like a Samsung Galaxy or a Google Pixel will indeed change all messages in the chat from blue to green. You also will not be able to change the group name of a chat with an Android number. The iOS 17 update for Apple devices has also improved group texting capabilities between iPhones and Androids so there are almost no differences now.

The Connectivity of Apple

The great thing about Apple devices is that you can connect them via your Apple ID. If you link your devices together, you will be able to access all group chats and contacts created on your iPhone on your Mac and iPad.

This means you can update the group chat on the five-second interaction you had with your work crush from your computer as well. Revolutionary.
